When you are preparing a new lawn you will have to decide on grass seed or using turf. Making use of grass seed is a lot cheaper than turf and has the benefit that you have a wider range of different types of lawn seed to pick from. The optimum time to sow the seed is in the Spring or early fall as you require moist and quite warm conditions. The summer isn’t an ideal time to seed your lawn as you’ll need to water two or three times a day and the hot conditions are not best for the new seedlings to develop.

Different kinds of lawn grass seeds develop at different rates so the time it will take for your new grass to be mature enough to use will be dependant on the species and the combination of lawn seed that you use. You will also want to consider the kind of grass seed you require. There are specialized shade grass seed for areas that don’t get a lot of sun, sunny grass seed for spots that do! An especially popular brand is Scotts grass seed.

Preparing Your Site

In advance of seeding the lawn you need to prepare the location suitably. The spot you have selected ought to be dug thoroughly and all stones taken out and sizeable clods broken down. Rake over the area and tamp down gently with your heels. The surface should then be scratched lightly to make furrows for the seeds.

How to Seed the Lawn

There are two techniques used to seed a lawn, by hand and with a machine. To use a machine, weigh out the amount of seed mixture needed for the area then place half into the machine and apply by operating the machine up and down the section in strips. As you get to end of each strip, to avoid over-seeding, either use plastic to cover the ground or close the holes in the machine. You might use sticks set into the earth or cables to direct you. At this point place the balance of the grass seeds into the machine and, working perpendicular to the original lines, finish sowing the lawn.

If you are manually seeding the lawn it’s best to divide the area into segments of a yard square using cord and sticks. Determine how much lawn seed you require for each segment, weight this out and place in a small container. Notice approximately how much this is so that you will not have to weigh out every time. Evenly sow the first section, sowing the seeds in both directions to make sure that they are spread evenly. Now restock the pot to around a similar height as previously and sow the next section. Carry on until all of the area is finished.

When the whole area has been finished rake over lightly and irrigate thoroughly.Throughout the following week to two weeks make certain that you water on a regular basis if is does not rain. The seedlings will begin to come through during this time.

Mowing Your New Lawn

As soon as the lawn seedlings are roughly 4 cm tall it is safe to mow the grass for the first time by using a rotary mower. Carefully collect grass trimmings or use a rake and be cautious not to disturb the new seedlings.
